New North American Clubs

In new club news, there are 4 new clubs and teams to shoutout:

  1. In BC, JP Ryan’s Vancouver announced the launch of their new camogie team for the 2024 season. They’re looking for camogie players of all levels. https://www.instagram.com/jpryanshurlingandcamogie/ 
  2. In BC, Vancouver Le Chéile Youth GAA has started a youth Gaelic Football and Hurling program for ages 5-12 years. https://www.instagram.com/vancouverlecheile/ 
  3. In NJ, Rutgers GAA Club has started up a college hurling club on campus and are looking for students to join their team. https://www.instagram.com/gaarutgers/
  4. In CA, Southridge Gaelic Athletic Club has started up in Fontana. https://www.instagram.com/southridgegac/

Scruffy City Invitational

In Tennessee, Knoxville GAC hosted the 7th Annual Scruffy City Hurling & Camogie Invitational in October. This year’s tournament was the biggest and best one yet with ten hurling teams and two camogie participating.

Knoxville GAC won the tournament and the Clancy Cup stayed in Knoxville for another year.

Fall Foley Cup

In New Hampshire, the Wolves hosted the Fall Foley Cup in October. Teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire competed in this 7-a-side tournament, with Worcester Fenians bringing home the trophy.

Cayman Islands 7’s

In the Caribbean, Cayman Islands GAA hosted their first ever 7-a-side hurling tournament in George Town, Grand Cayman in October. Four teams lined out as Dublin, Limerick, Tipperary, and Kilkenny for this one day competition.

The Cayman Islands GAA hurling team was started in 2022 and has been steadily growing ever since.

For our segment, Give This Person A Hurl, here’s a softball player showing a ton of camogie potential.

They Gave Them A Hurl

In our other segment, They Gave Them A Hurl, here’s a throwback to that time Tony Hawk was presented with a hurlboard, a skateboard made from hurls, in Ireland.

NCGAA Fall Regional Tournaments

In college hurling, NCGAA Fall Regional Championships were held across the US in October and November.

The Catholic University of America hosted and won the NCGAA Eastern Regionals.

Purdue University Hurling Club hosted and won the Midwest Regionals.

CU Boulder Gaelic Club won in the NCGAA Western Regionals in Montana.

O-Town Invitational

In Florida, Orlando GAA hosted the O-Town Invitational 9’s Hurling and Camogie Tournament in November. The tournament began with a “Hurl-O-Ween” match and was followed by standard group stage hurling matches, And Hartford GAA walked away as the tournament winners.

Video of 2023

The Video of 2023 goes to New Logical Sports who live streamed the New York Senior hurling and camogie finals in July. Over 10,000 viewers across all platforms tuned in to watch the live streams.

Club of the Month

October’s Club of the Month goes to Éire Óg Ottawa who hosted the 4th Annual Heritage Cup.

A special thanks to Shane from Éire Óg for taking over the Play Hurling social media accounts.

During their takeover week, they shared their club preparations for the Heritage Cup, player profiles, and shared live action on the day during their tournament. Clubs travelled to Ottawa from Toronto, Kingston, and Montreal for the Heritage Cup.

Toronto’s Na Piarsaigh won in both the hurling and camogie Heritage Cup finals.
