Keep up with the expanding North American Hurling community as we take a look back at July 2023.

Highlights include: GAA World Games, Continental Youth Championships, and hurling being featured at a US Soccer matches.

2023 GAA World Games

The highly anticipated GAA World Games took place in Derry this July. More than 2,000 players from 100+ clubs from around the world competed, making it the biggest GAA World Games to date.

There were some remarkable performances from North American clubs in the finals of this GAA World Games. The success of North American teams in this tournament made clear the growing popularity of hurling and camogie across the continent.

Virginia’s Richmond Battery GAA took over our social media accounts during this tournament. More on that later!

Continental Youth Championships

In California, San Francisco GAA hosted the Continental Youth Championships for children aged from U-8 to U-18. The CYC is the largest Gaelic Sports competition outside of Ireland with over 2,600 children playing over 200 games.

The 2024 CYC will be held in Boston, MA from July 11-14, 2024.

US Soccer Matches Feature Hurling

There are two instances for hurling being promoted at US soccer matches in July.

First up, in Wisconsin, the Hurling Club of Madison demonstrated hurling during half-time of the Forward Madison FC match.

And, in California, we at Play Hurling and the Los Angeles Hurling Club set up a booth to introduce hurling to LA Galaxy fans.

Raleigh Oak City Cup

In North Carolina, Raleigh Cú Chulainn hosted the Oak City Hurling and Camogie Invitational.

Raleigh won in the camogie and Richmond won in the hurling. And Play Hurling provided sliotars for the tournament.

Liberty Bell Championships

In Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Youth GAA hosted the 10th Annual Liberty Bell Championships for players aged U6-U18.

In our new segment, Give This Person A Hurl, here’s Guinness World Record holder, Zac Bell, doing ice hockey trick shots with pots and pans.

They Gave This Person A Hurl

In our other segment, They Gave This Person A Hurl, here’s Edmonton Wolfe Tones GAA club teaching professional baseball players how to play hurling between innings at a Riverhawk Baseball game.

Club of the Month

July’s club of the month goes to Virginia’s Richmond Battery GAA club who travelled to Derry for the GAA World Games.

A special thanks to Jenn from Richmond Battery GAA for taking over our social media accounts and sharing her club’s experience at the tournament. Their camogie team made it to the final and came in second place. They were only behind by 1 point in extra time in their final match.

Upcoming Hurling Tournaments

Looking to get started with hurling or camogie this August? Here are a few tournaments to look out for:

August 12 – Vancouver GAA will host the Senior, Intermediate, and Junior Hurling Finals.
📍 Vancouver, BC

August 18-20 – 120 teams from across the continent will compete in the USGAA Finals.
📍 Denver, CO

August 19 – The National Hurling Reserve Cup Championship will be held in Chicago’s Gaelic Park for teams who couldn’t participate in the USGAA Finals.
📍 Chicago, IL
